Bernstein met Thomas Wolfe in 1925 on a voyage between Europe and New York. Wolfe and Bernstein, the wife of a prominent New York stock broker and 18 years older than Wolfe, became lovers in Oct. 1925 and remained so for the next five years. The News Bureau had its origin in the appointment, in 1919, of a director of publications, who was responsible for keeping the state's newspapers informed of the activities of the University of North Carolina. In 1921, that position's title changed to director of the News Bureau.
